Tribute to Dr. Lawrence Field (Aug. 3, 1929 to Oct. 2, 2020)

Professor Dr. Lawrence M. Field, MD, FIACS, HMAAD, HFASDS held academic appointments at the University of Missouri; the University of California, San Francisco (Dermatologic Surgery); and Stanford University Medical Center, Stanford, California. He was also appointed Adjunct Professor in Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Center Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous surgery, San Antonio, Texas.

In his younger years, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps and the USMC Reserve. He later worked as a specialist/consultant for the Arabian-American Oil Company (Aramco) in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and as dermatologic consultant to the Royal family of His Majesty King Saud bin Abdul Aziz ibn Saud, and as consultant dermatologist to the U.S.

Dr. Field established a private practice in San Luis Obispo, CA; participated with the initial diplomatic teaching mission of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; and became increasingly active in international teaching. He established and International Traveling Mentorship Program, was an honorary member of multiple surgical societies, and was inducted into the Liposuction Hall of Fame.

"Prof" (as he preferred to be called) presented the first-ever liposuction cases at the American Academy of Dermatology and has since served as keynote speaker in over 65 countries. After decades of struggle, his vision for International Fellowship venues under ASDS/DASIL supervision became a reality -- the only specialty in the world to offer such educational programs. In 2017, the World Health Organization’s International League of Dermatologic Societies conferred on Dr. Field the International Leadership and Lifetime Achievement Award.
